A Global Call to End State Violence and Restore Justice in Africa

Introduction: The Unseen Crisis

In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), over 100 young men have been executed, and 70 more face the same fate. These executions, following a hasty revival of the death penalty, have sent shockwaves across the globe.

For many, this is not justice but a stark reminder of the dangers of unchecked state power. As the world remains largely silent, these lives, full of potential, are reduced to mere statistics.

The Human Cost

Behind each execution is a story of struggle and lost potential. Jean Mukeba, 24, dreamed of opening a small repair shop. Instead, he was rounded up in a raid, labeled a criminal, and executed without a fair trial.

“This is not about justice,” says Dr. Jacques Kalema, a leading Congolese sociologist. “This is about fear and control in a society desperate for reform.”

Root Causes: Poverty and Injustice

Congo’s youth face a harsh reality: 35% unemployment and rising urban crime driven by inequality. The government’s response—mass arrests and executions—is a brutal distraction from its failure to address systemic poverty.

Justice Minister Constant Mutamba claims the executions will end “urban terrorism.” Critics, however, argue this policy only deepens societal fractures, perpetuating cycles of violence and mistrust.

Global Outcry

Amnesty International has condemned the executions, urging President Félix Tshisekedi to reinstate the moratorium on the death penalty. “These acts are a gross violation of international human rights standards,” said Sarah Jackson, Amnesty’s Deputy Regional Director for East and Southern Africa.

Wole Soyinka, the Nobel Laureate, added his voice: “Africa must reject violence as governance. Our leaders owe us solutions, not atrocities.”

Learning from History

From Idi Amin’s Uganda to Ethiopia’s Red Terror, history warns us that state violence does not build peace. Instead, it leaves deep scars that last generations.

“Justice must be restorative, not retributive,” says Dr. Angela Mensah, a Ghanaian political scientist. “Addressing poverty and inequality is the only path to long-term stability.”

A Call to Action

The mass executions in Congo demand global attention and action. Here’s how you can make a difference:

1. Raise Awareness: Share this article and use your platforms to amplify the issue.

2. Support Advocacy Groups: Donate to organizations fighting for justice in Congo, like Amnesty International and local human rights groups.

3. Contact Global Leaders: Pressure international governments to condemn these acts and hold the DRC accountable.

4. Demand Systemic Change: Advocate for reforms that address poverty, education, and youth employment.

Conclusion: The Time to Act is Now

The executions in Congo are not just an African tragedy—they are a global failure to protect human dignity. By standing together, we can demand accountability and advocate for a brighter future where justice prevails.

As Desmond Tutu once said, “If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.” The time to act is now.
