It’s disturbing that a Black student can face school discrimination over their natural hair, while a white man, after committing a heinous crime in a Black church, is treated to Burger King by police. How do such glaring disparities in treatment still prevail in a so-called just society?

Where’s the logic in this?

It’s a reflection of the systemic bias that continues to permeate our institutions. We cannot turn a blind eye to these injustices any longer. Change is not just necessary; it is urgent. This isn’t just about fairness—it’s about building a society where equity and justice are the norm, not the exception.

Highlighting these two troubling instances of discrimination and unequal treatment in society is just surface scratching of a deeper rooted problem of white privilege in my humble view.

The first case involving a Black child being discriminated against because of their hair reflects the ongoing issue of racial bias and the policing of Black identity in schools and other institutions.

Hair, which is a natural part of one’s culture and heritage, should not be a basis for exclusion or punishment, yet this form of discrimination persists in various forms across many settings.

The second situation, where a white man who committed a heinous act of violence was treated with unexpected leniency by law enforcement (even being taken to a fast food joint before his arrest), underscores the disparities in how justice is applied based on race.

This stark contrast reveals systemic issues within the justice system, where Black individuals often face harsher treatment for lesser offenses, while white individuals committing extreme crimes sometimes receive preferential or humane treatment.

Dylann Roof, who, after committing the horrific Charleston church shooting in 2015, was apprehended and given food from Burger King by the arresting officers. This treatment of Roof, in stark contrast to how people of color often face harsher policing for far lesser offenses, has sparked significant outrage and criticism. Many point to it as an example of systemic racial bias within law enforcement practices.

Although, George, lost the case; U.S. District Judge Jeffrey Brown in his ruling, posed a thought-provoking question: does the school district’s rule serve a genuine purpose, or is it ultimately causing more harm than benefit? George plans to appeal.

Dylann Roof’s heinous act of racially motivated violence and Darryl George’s fight against discriminatory hair policies both expose the insidious roots of systemic racism. Roof’s massacre highlights the dire need for reforms addressing racial violence, while George’s struggle calls attention to institutional biases in schools.

Together, these cases amplify the urgency for comprehensive social justice reforms that dismantle prejudice in every facet of society—be it deadly or subtle.

The underlying question is one of fairness and equity. These examples illustrate how deep-rooted biases affect both everyday experiences (like a child’s education) and critical moments (like the criminal justice process). It speaks to the need for continued efforts to challenge and dismantle racial inequalities. Justice for Daryl George:
